International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia

Today, May 17th, Narwhal Magic Kindness recognizes International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. This year the theme is “Together Always: United in Diversity.” Launched in 2004, it is a global occasion to educate about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, and to advocate for sensible public policies regarding LGBT people.

Here at Narwhal, we recognize that many parents and families are not at liberty to disclose in the name of fighting against oppressive laws and policies being promulgated against our precious transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse kids. On this day of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia we focus on the importance of ensuring our children have safe spaces inside our four walls. Their home. Here are some suggestions to consider:

  1. Never allow a person to deadname or misgender your child inside of your home. While we might not be able to be forward facing for fear of safety in public, our children should find safety and affirmation inside our home.

  2. Seriously consider your words. Our Founder, Jan Moore, wrote about the Dangers of Using Derogatory Terms to Motivate.

  3. If you cannot display signs of affirmation outside of the home, then hang a flag or Safe Space narwhal inside. Our clings are the perfect symbol of safety and affirmation.

  4. Turn off the news. Seriously, our children should not listen to NPR in the mornings or watch CNN in the evenings. The news is terrifying for trans people right now; please shield their hearts and brains as long as possible.

What will you do on this International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia? Please drop your comment in the post or email us privately at narwhalmagickindness@gmail.com
