It is with a heavy heart that my whole world view of Harry Potter has been shattered into a million pieces. I canNOT believe that J.K. Rowling has personally attacked transgender women. I don't know how I am going to break this news to my daughter or to my children. We can no longer financially support her enterprise.
My husband and I laid in bed last night in shock. Amazing that she wrote such strong, underdog characters who were so much like our beautiful trans daughter. Magical, kind, beautiful, strong and changing the world. Yet, Ms. Rowling's real life she is supporting a woman who believes that transphobia should be a privilege that should be a protected right in the UK. So much so that it should be a protected class like those with a disability or minority in the US. Providing job protections so they cannot be discriminated against. These people believe that they should be able to openly discriminate, in a workplace, against my daughter, for her gender identity. J.K. Rowling has taken a public stance in support of this woman, not on the basis of freedom of speech or right to choose but on the basis that natal gender "men" should not be able to identify as transgender women. Let me be very clear- this is a HARMFUL, VIOLENT attack on transgender people and specifically on trans women. To minimize it as less is to dismiss the self-harm and suicide statistics that are known to be true for trans youth. Please do not minimize the impact of such a pivotal person in the lives of our children, even if they are "just famous," on their self image.

We didn't expect to have a transgender child. She is a perfectly normal, beautiful, kind, smart, funny, fun person, just like your sweet baby. The difference being, she has to walk into a world where she will be violently attacked, both emotionally and potentially physically when we can no longer control the environment and the narrative. This is not the path we would have chosen for her but it is the best path for her. She is happy, well adjusted and is perfectly her. She is who God intended for her to be.
